  • WHY STUDY PREFIXES, ROOTS, AND SUFFIXES?
The basic meaning or meanings of words can best be realized if one develops a good working knowledge of prefixes, roots, and suffixes. These word-cells, found throughout our language, have come to us from many languages. The greatest number derive from Latin and Greek. In fact, approximately one out of every two words we use daily comes from Latin. The influence of the Greek language is noted in approximately one out of every six words. Together, Latin and Greek form the basis of about two-thirds of the words we speak, read, or write. The remainder of our words come to us from Old English and other languages. Our language will always be part of us. The Latin and Greek prefixes, roots, and suffixes found in our words will consequently remain with us. Because of their direct influence on our language, is it not therefore logical that we concentrate on making them part of our basic vocabulary?

The teaching of the Latin and Greek languages is rapidly fading from our educational scene. The fact that they are no longer being taught to any great degree is unfortunate. With this fading process also goes the "learning of those word-cells which explain much of our vocabulary. The answer therefore rests in our ability to gather and learn those word-cells which can assist us in the understanding of our Latin and Greek related words. Such is the basic intent of this book.

This study has been prepared so that any individual coming in contact with it, can become involved in and follow a simplified, yet encompassing course of word-cell study. The cells discussed touch upon many areas of learning (history, geography, drama, mathematics, sociology, physics, biology, medicine, etc.). As such; a knowledge of these word-cells affords one a more in depth understanding of the terminology used in those areas of learning.

Once involved in this type of learning, one develops an awareness of words and their basic makeup. Words spoken throughout one's lifetime suddenly become alive and basically understood. Words whose definitions required constant consultation with a dictionary, are now viewed etymologically and thereby understood through one’s own knowledge of word-cells.
Through a greater knowledge of prefixes, roots~ and suffixes, one can anticipate becoming a better speller. The ability to dissect words etymologically does much in this respect. One can also look forward to becoming a better reader. This the result of being able to recognize and therefore understand more words because of their cell makeup.
This collection of word-cells makes possible the dissection and understanding of numerous words. In reality, there are thousands of word-cells. Those you are about to learn can become the foundation upon which you
continue to build your house of word understanding.
